Chayce Beckham’s American Idol win Sunday night was super-thrilling & happy. But it was too complicated as it meant his friend, fellow contestant Willie Spence, had failed. Hence the moment Chayce was named the winner was “bittersweet,” he stated Access.
It is been a long road & a season loaded with more controversy than fans would have preferred, but American Idol finally named its newest winner earlier in country singer Beckham. As you can imagine, there are a lot of fans who were rooting for either runner-up Willie Spence or third place finalist Grace Kinstler to come out on top, but there was another moment of the night to talk about a lot, and this one had host Ryan Seacrest. And, many fans were not at all happy with Seacrest after he made what they assumed was a tone-deaf joke about the new Season 19 winner.
“Because Willie, that is my man, dude. That is my boy right there,” Beckham told. “Like, I love Willie. We hang out outside of the competition, you know, we are tight.”
Chayce explained that he had shared an interchange with Spence as they created their way to the Idol stage for the last time together. He began turning judges’ heads during his time on the show, thanks to his distinctive raspy voice, country-rock stylings, & powerful personal backstory. The 24-year-old California native gave early on that he came to American Idol after a tough year which led to a steep relationship with alcohol & a near-fatal car crash.
The singer’s disturbing personal journey translated to compelling shows every time he got on stage, and he brought authenticity to world-weary ballads by the likes of Zac Brown Band, Tyler Childers, and Chris Stapleton. Chayce also proved that his voice could quickly find a home in multiple genres, as he duetted with Incubus rocker Brandon Boyd and presented a song by Bob Marley & the Wailers during his time on the show.
